Colourful headshots

I've always loved the artistic freedom that using color allows in imagery - growing up I watched a lot of Saturday Night Live and I loved the vivid portraits of portrait photographer Mary Ellen Matthews that would pop up in between commercials. I've been experimenting with color-grading my headshots. I think it adds a bit of a cinematic feel - here are a few of my favs.

2015 is flying by fast, and I've finally had a chance to look back at some of the executives and entrepreneurs that have come by our Central studio for their profile photos. I always enjoy thinking back to some of the interesting chats I was able to have during these sessions - here are some of my favorite portraits from the first half of the year.

Corporate headshot photography for company website

Corporate portrait photography for an electronics design company based in Hong Kong. The headshots were used for their website and corporate marketing materials. I love photographing for this type of look - slightly stylized lighting with a touch of individual personality with each portrait.

Comedian Headshots with Chris Musni

I first met Chris Musni years ago shooting the comedy club scene in Central. He is one of the co-founders of and is incredibly passionate about stand-up. I've been fortunate to shoot other local comics and I always love working with them because they are constantly thinking creatively and are always open to new things. Chris was no different - we chatted about the local comedy scene while shooting a few looks in the studio and outside around the studio. We talked about why Jerry Seinfeld is under appreciated and the brilliance of Chris Rock. The comedian headshots will be part of Chris' upcoming website revamp.

Corporate headshots in the studio, Hong Kong

Lately I’ve been asked to shoot a lot of in-studio corporate headshots, and I have to be honest, photographing executives in business suits is not exactly the sexiest area of photography. Nevertheless, I’ve really grown to like it. For my clients, their need for new headshots usually marks an interesting crossroads in their life. Some have just arrived in Hong Kong in search of new beginnings, others have been here for years but are joining a new firm. Some clients need portraits to update their online or social media presence (eg. LinkedIn, Facebook), others as part of their first steps in setting up a new small business. Some have no concrete plan at all (which I can particularly relate to). So in the hour that I usually spend in a portrait session, I usually get to hear an interesting story or two. As the subject, I think the session is a fairly relaxing break in a busy day – when they can chat, loosen their tie (if the shot doesn’t need one), and maybe even smile! Here are some outtakes from some recent corporate headshot sessions that were not the final picks but I like them anyway:

Renato and Cristina, husband and wife architect team (and entrepreneurs).

Rebecca, executive coach and proud mom (laughing at her daughter making faces over my shoulder).

Angela, Director in recruiting.

Kieron is restarting his career in HK. Ella works for city’super!
